Welsh National Opera wins TMA Achievement in Opera Award for its 2010 landmark production of Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg
Last night, WNO was presented with the prestigious award at a ceremony held at the Lyric Theatre in London. John Fisher, WNO’s Chief Executive and Artistic Director, accepted the award on behalf of the company from the tenor Alfie Boe.
"This is a great honour," Mr Fisher says, "and one so well deserved. I want to stress that this award has been won by the whole company; it is recognition for every person who works at WNO, and acknowledges their extraordinary commitment in meeting the enormous challenge of performing such a complex and ambitious work. It is also highlights again the magnificent cast led by Bryn Terfel, the marvellous conducting of Lothar Koenigs, WNO’s Music Director, and the brilliant production of Richard Jones and his team."
The ceremony was hosted by Strictly Coming Dancing’s Craig Revel Horwood. The shortlist for the TMA Achievement in Opera Award was WNO (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Glyndebourne (Billy Budd) and Opera North (Ruddigore). WNO previously won the award for its 2006 production of Mazepa.
