When the company made its first London appearance at Sadler’s Wells in July 1955 (in the middle of a heatwave), mezzo Muriel Pointon, who ran a butcher’s shop in Cardiff, had to work in the shop every morning, catch the midday train to London, perform, then catch the overnight train back to Cardiff and go straight to the market to buy meat.
