Peggy Moreland

14
December 1973

On stage with them for her only stage appearance, dressed in costume but promising not to sing, was Margaret Moreland, WNO’s
company secretary. No account of WNO, however brief, would be complete without mention of the remarkable Peggy Moreland.
She had just given up her job in a solicitor’s office in order to spend more time at home with her family when she was invited into
Frederick Street in 1949 by Bill Smith to help out for a couple of days to type the minutes of a board meeting. She left thirtyseven
years later. If Smith was the general, Moreland was the lieutenant. He had the ideas; she made them happen.
