Audio Described Tosca

View A Different Opera

The world of opera singer Floria Tosca is about to be turned upside down. She is suspicious of her lover Mario’s fidelity. Little does she realize that he is at the centre of a struggle that will lead to tragedy. Soon she herself will become the object of Scarpia’s insatiable lust and she will be forced to ask what she has done to deserve this.

Once decried as a "shabby little shocker", Tosca has become one of the best-loved of all operas. The combination of its fast paced plot, high tension and the poignancy of the great arias "Vissi d’arte" and "E lucevan le stelle" ensure that Tosca never fails to enthrall.

Audio Description
Audio Description creates vivid spoken images for blind and partially sighted audiences members, allowing them to capture fully the visual aspects of a performance.

Audio Description is a verbal commentary providing information about the visual elements of the production as the story unfolds. This is relayed through an easy to use and lightweight headset worn by the listener.

Delivered live and simultaneously with the performance, the Audio Describer provides a visual description of the action, facial expressions and body language. They guide the listener through new scenes, costumes and the relationship and positioning of the characters. The style of the production is also highlighted through description of lighting, locations, atmosphere, and mood.

Touch Tour
For most Audio Described performances a free Touch Tour is also available. Click here for details of Touch Tours available for autumn, spring and summer 2009.

Touch Tours are highly recommended as something which will compliment your experience of the Audio Described performance as it allows blind or visually impaired patrons to touch elements of the set, examine some props, and gain an awareness of the acting and performance space.
