Rossini’s sunny masterpiece
Count Almaviva has everything a man could wish for. He’s young, rich and handsome.
One thing is missing however – a wife. He is head over heels in love with the lovely Rosina but has had to admire her from afar. She is kept under lock and key by the curmudgeonly Doctor Bartolo. Help is at hand when Almaviva hires the city’s Mr Fix-it, Figaro – the Barber of Seville – to come to his aid. Even with Figaro on the case, Almaviva will discover that thwarting Bartolo will be far from easy.
The Barber of Seville is a comic masterpiece, a ray of sunlight that has uplifted audiences the world over for almost two centuries. From the mischievous overture, to the hilarious ‘Largo al factotum’, The Barber of Seville is relentlessly entertaining and a glorious showcase of singing. Giles Havergal’s classic period-set production is a master-class of comic timing. An outstanding ensemble of singers includes Eric Roberts, returning as the definitive Bartolo. Alexander Polianichko will conduct the opera for the first time.
