Boxing Beats is the fifth Street Songs project, continuing the exploration between music and sport first developed with WNO's Surf Tailz project.
Boxing Beats is a partnership project between Welsh National Opera and Academi, and worked with boxers across amateur clubs in Caerphilly throughout February - April 2009.
Working with writer Louise Walsh, herself a boxer and author of the novel 'Fighting Pretty' the members started to explore writing through journalling and adapted it into song lyrics with the help of composer, Petter Swaffer Reynolds and three professional opera singers. The boxers also explored rhythm and beats, using their hands in a different way through engaging with drumming techniques. This work was supported by celebrated percussionist, Dave Danford, who works regularly with Radio One DJ Judge Jules as well as within many classical repertoires and orchestras.
The final performance took place as a "song battle" within the ring at one of the local boxing clubs, with a second performance on WMC Glanfa Stage on Wednesday 13 May.
WNO Media Unit has commissioned award winning documentary film maker David Evans to create a film based around the Boxing Beats project for WNO website. David is a BAFTA winning director who also boxes in his spare time - at Gelligaer gym in the Valleys where part of the project will be held - check back for an exclusive look at the film soon.
