Roland Wood

Roland Wood was born in Berkshire and studied at Royal Northern College of Music, then at National Opera Studio.

His operatic career began as a bass-baritone and his early roles included Silva, Ernani and Colline La Bohème (RNCM); Cromo I Giganti della Montagna (Batignano); Luka The Bear and Martino L'Occasione fa il Ladro (Walton Trust) ; Zaretsky Onegin (European Union Opera); Don Basilio Barber of Seville (Aix en Musique Festival).

In 2000 Roland covered the roles of Ned Keene Peter Grimes and Nick Shadow Rake's Progress (Glyndebourne Festival Opera). In 2001 he toured with ESO and sang Marcello La Bohème. In 2002 he made his début at ENO as The Baron La Traviata, and was a company principal at SO, roles included Dr Falke Die Fledermaus and Marullo Rigoletto; Papageno Die Zauberflöte.

In 2005 he recorded three further CD’s for Opera Rara, and appeared with the London Philharmonic in an associated concert of Donizetti’s Il Diluvio Universale. He returned to ENO, Scottish Opera on Tour singing Peter Hansel & Gretel and sang Escamillo for Castleward Opera.

2006 highlights included Kissinger Nixon in China and Ajax II La Belle Helene (ENO) and Child of our Time (Hallé). In 2007 he sang the title role in Eugene Onegin (ETO) and was asked to reprise the role of Kissinger in Athens. He also appeared again with the London Philharmonic at the RFH and recorded Bellini’s La Straniera for Opera Rara.

In 2008 he returned to ENO for Alfio Cavalleria rusticana, sang title role in Don Giovanni (ETO) and Papageno (Opera Holland Park). In 2009 he sings Marcello for ENO and Don Fernando Fidelio and Renato Un ballo in maschera (Nationale Reisopera).
