Born in Chirk, North Wales, David Kempster studied at Royal Northern College of Music. He joined English National Opera as a Principal Baritone in 1998; roles included Lescaut Manon Lescaut, Il Conte di Luna Il trovatore, Poacher The Cunning Little Vixen, Teddy Foran in the world premiere of Mark Anthony Turnage’s The Silver Tassie. With WNO roles include title role Don Giovanni, Marcello La bohème, his debut as Iago Otello, title role Nabucco. Other engagements include Sharpless Madam Butterfly, his US debut, Nottingham Roberto Devereux (Dallas Opera); Lescaut (Florida Grand Opera). Concert appearances include Fauré’s Requiem (BBC National Orchestra of Wales); Carmina Burana (London Concert Orchestra, the Barbican; Hallé; Jersey Symphony Orchestra; National Eisteddfod of Wales); The Dream of Gerontius (Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra; Welsh Proms); Eugene Onegin (Hallé/Mark Elder); Leonore (Schlossfestspiele, Ludwigsburg). Recent engagements include Peter The Apostles (Hallé Orchestra; BBC Proms); Sharpless (Royal Danish Opera); Chekunov / Don Juan / Brahmine From the House of the Dead, Iago (Opera North); Amonasro Aida (Royal Albert Hall); Balstrode Peter Grimes on Aldeburgh beach (Aldeburgh Festival). Future roles include Sévère Les Martyrs for a concert and recording with Sir Mark Elder and Opera Rara.
