Lawrence Foster is Music Director of L’Opéra de Marseille. In January 2013, he conducted the inaugural concert of the festivities of Marseille-Provence 2013, starting its year as one of the European capitals of culture, and they ended the 2012/2013 season with performances of Massenet’s Cléopâtre and Berlioz Les Troyens. This season sees productions of La traviata and Le Roi D’Ys and future plans include Der fliegende Holländer, Falstaff and Madam Butterfly. The orchestra also has plans to tour China in 2013/2014. Following a hugely successful ten-year tenure as Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Lawrence now becomes their Conductor Laureate. Lawrence previously held Music Directorships with the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Houston Symphony, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne and Aspen Music Festival and School. He was Music Director of Orchestre et Opéra National de Montpellier Languedoc Roussillon from 2009 to 2012.
He has also conducted in major opera houses worldwide including regular appearances with Hamburgische Staatsoper, where he this season conducted The Cunning Little Vixen to great critical acclaim. Also his new production of Rusalka at Opéra de Monte Carlo was highly successful. Future engagements include The Magic Flute at San Francisco Opera and concerts with the Symphony Orchestras in Bamberg, Copenhagen and Lucerne.
