Having studied at Guildhall School of Music and Drama and National Opera Studio, Nicky Spence took a place as a Harewood Artist at English National Opera. 2014/2015 Season highlights include David Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (ENO); recital with Roger Vignoles for Oxford Lieder; Benvenuto Cellini under Sir Mark Elder (De Nederlandse Opera). On stage, his roles include Števa Jenůfa (La Monnaie); Brian Two Boys (The Metropolitan Opera; ENO); Novice Billy Budd, Francesco Benvenuto Cellini (ENO); Tamino Die Zauberflöte, Steuermann Die Fliegende Holländer, Lummer Intermezzo (Scottish Opera); Iago Otello (Buxton Festival); Chevalier de la Force Les dialogues des Carmélites (Grange Park Opera); Isacco La Gazza Ladra (Oper Frankfurt); Don Ottavio Don Giovanni (New Zealand Opera); Lampwick The Adventures of Pinocchio (Opera North); Tom Rakewell The Rake’s Progress, Jaquino Fidelio (Opera Holland Park). Concert performances include New York recital debut with Malcolm Martineau; Britten’s War Requiem (Konzerthaus, Berlin); Tristan und Isolde with BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra/Runnicles; Finzi’s Dies Natalis with BBC Concert Orchestra/Hill; recitals at Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room and Concertgebouw. Recordings include debut solo recital disc As you like it: Shakespeare Songs. Future recording plans include a Wolf disc with Sholto Kynoch; a Mélodie disc with Malcolm Martineau (Chandos) and Jonathan Dove: Song-Cycles (Naxos).
