Born in mid-Wales, Rebecca Afonwy-Jones studied at Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where she was awarded the Independent Opera Scholarship, The WCOM Allcard Award, the MBF Sybil Tutton Award and became a Samling Scholar. She continues to study with John Evans. While at RCS, roles included Cherubino Le nozze di Figaro; Componist Ariadne auf Naxos (Rostov State Theatre); Muse/Nicklausse Les Contes d’Hoffmann; Maria Akhrosimova War & Peace. She also made her BBC Proms debut in Vaughan Williams Serenade to Music conducted by Donald Runnicles (BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra). As a Scottish Opera Emerging Artist 2010/2011, she sang Carmen, Fox The Cunning Little Vixen; Resi Intermezzo and Countess Ceprano Rigoletto. Rebecca also made her debut in 2012 for Opera North as Chambermaid The Makropulos Case at the Edinburgh International Festival. Rebecca made her WNO company debut as Countess Geschwitz Lulu and in September 2013 she was appointed as WNO Associate Artist, singing Anna Kennedy Maria Stuarda. Her position is supported by The Garrick Charitable Trust, WNO Sir John Moores Award, Chris Ball Bursary, Schaefer Bursary and Parry Family Bursary.
