Rudolf Frey

Director Maria Stuarda

Rudolf Frey was born in Salzburg, Austria. After assisting directors such as Andrea Breth, Luc Bondy, Martin Kušej, Robert Carsen and others, from 2007 he went on to direct operas and plays. He has directed productions for companies and theatres in Austria and Germany including Das wundervolle Zwischending, Wandlungen einer Ehe (Vienna Burgtheater); Le malade imaginaire, Vivaldi’s Farnace (Salzburger Landestheater); Nora, A Streetcar Named Desire, Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald (Schauspielhaus Salzburg); including a theatre series about the life and work of Franz Schubert (Schauspielhaus Wien); Blithe Spirit (Stadttheater Klagenfurt); Ghosts, Egmont, The Gipsy Princess, The Magic Flute (Südthüringisches Staatstheater Meiningen); Altes Schauspielhaus Stuttgart, Landestheater Eisenach and the Schlossfestspiele Langenlois. At the Staatsoper Stuttgart he recently staged Giuseppe Verdi‘s Nabucco. In 2013 he was awarded the Kurt-Hübner-Regiepreis by the German Society of Performing Arts for his recent work. His forthcoming engagements include the German premiere of Ifigenia in Tauride by Tommaso Traetta (Rococo Theatre in Schwetzingen Castle, Germany) and Der Rosenkavalier (Südthüringisches Staatstheater Meiningen).
