Stephen Wells studied in New Zealand and at the Royal Northern College of Music where he was the recipient of the Brigitte Fassbaender Lieder Prize. He studied singing with Neil Howlett, Patrick McGuigan and Enid Hartle, and has worked on roles and repertoire with Sergei Leiferkus and Andreas Scholl. He has sung with Wellington City Opera, Opera 74, Lakeland Opera, Bel Canto Opera, Claxton Opera, Guildford Opera, Opera Holland Park, Opera Les Azuriales, Onafhankeleijk Toneel (Netherlands), Scottish Ballet and Opera North. Operatic engagements include Count Le nozze di Figaro, Gugliemo Così fan tutte, Speaker Die Zauberflöte, Smirnov The Bear, Plunkett Martha, title role Eugene Onegin, Musiklehrer Ariadne auf Naxos, Dulcamara The Elixir of Love, Riccardo The Night Bell, Danilo The Merry Widow, Sid La fanciulla del West. He has also performed and recorded frequently with the BBC Singers, BBC Daily Service, Geoffrey Mitchell Choir and Manchester Cathedral Choir and has appeared as a soloist with numerous choirs and choral societies in the UK. Stephen joined the WNO Chorus in June 2009 where roles have included Usher Rigoletto, Second Prisoner Fidelio, Lackey Ariadne auf Naxos, Imperial Commissioner Madam Butterfly, Lord Rochefort Anna Bolena.
