William Robert Allenby studied at the Royal Academy of Music and at the RSAMD, and was the recipient of various scholarships and awards. More recently he studied with Michelle Wegwart and Theodor Uppman in New York. He has sung with companies including English National Opera, Scottish Opera, Opera North, Opera Holland Park, Mid Wales Opera, The Opera Project, Iford Arts, New Sussex Opera, Buxton Opera House, Opera Ireland, D'Oyly Carte opera, Glyndebourne and Linbury Studio, Covent Garden. He has also sung in Belgium, Holland, France, Italy, Spain, Iceland, Australia, Asia, and has appeared regularly on Channel 4 and at the BBC Proms.

Roles include Dulcamara L'elisir d'amore, Sacristan Tosca, Dr Wilhelm Reischmann Elegy for Young Lovers, Pish-Tush The Mikado, Marcello La bohème, Dr Bartolo Il barbiere de Sivigilia, Somarone Béatrice et Bénedict, Monterone Rigoletto, Simone Gianni Schicchi, Rambaldo La rondine, Masetto Don Giovanni, Antonio Le nozze di Figaro, Germont La traviata, Araspe Tolemeo, Moralès Carmen, Alfio Cavalleria rusticana, Teacher Die Jasager, Judge Parke in the world premiere of Will Todd's The Blackened Man, Duke of Cornwall in Toshio Hosakawa's Vision of Lear, and title role in Alexander Goehr's The Blind Man. Engagements in 2013 include Alcindoro La bohème (Royal Opera House); Barone Douphol La traviata (Iford Arts Festival).
