Revival Director: Tosca (Autumn 2013)
Benjamin Davis studied in the UK, France and Brazil and lives in Cardiff. He joined Welsh National Opera in 2001 and worked on over 30 touring productions as staff director before pursuing a freelance career. As an opera director he has created UK touring productions of Così fan tutte, Il tabarro, Star-crossed Lovers (WNO); Il trittico (Il tabarro, Suor Angelica, Gianni Schicchi) (Opera Zuid, Netherlands tour); and staged Les Illuminations (Cardiff International Dance Festival, with National Dance Company Wales and WNO).Collaborations as associate or movement director include world premieres of George Benjamin’s Written on Skin (Le Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, currently touring Europe extensively); and Manfred Trojahn’s Orest (Netherlands Opera); Al gran sole (Salzburg Festival; Berlin Staatsoper); Jephtha (Royal Danish Opera). He directed the revival of Gianni Schicchi (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden), shown as part of Richard Jones’s production of Il trittico. Other revivals of award-winning productions include Wozzeck, The Queen of Spades and Hansel and Gretel, as well as Tosca and The Magic Flute (WNO); Hansel and Gretel (Portland Opera; Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich).
