This production is his 175th production of 113 different titles worldwide. He was Music Director of the Dallas Opera (1994-2013), and of Glyndebourne Touring Opera (1986-1991); Principal Conductor Köln Oper (1997-2002). In the UK he has worked at Covent Garden, ENO, Scottish Opera, Opera North and Glyndebourne. In Europe: Genova Opera, Netherlands Opera, Paris Opera; Deutsche Oper Berlin, Bayerische Staatsoper and since 2005 Vienna State Opera (Billy Budd, Jenu˚fa, Cavalleria rusticana / I pagliacci, Der fliegende Höllander and Peter Grimes this November). In Scandinavia, Royal Danish Opera and Royal Swedish Opera. In Australia he made his debut with Baz Luhrmann’s La bohème and also conducted Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Der Rosenkavalier. Elsewhere he has worked for Canadian Opera, Glimmerglass and Opera Theater St Louis. He has conducted two world premieres: Stephen Oliver’s Timon of Athens (ENO) and Tobias Picker’s Thérèse Raquin (recorded for Chandos). In his time in Dallas he conducted 60 productions, highlights include: Der Ring des Nibelungen, Lohengrin, Tristan and Isolde, Ariodante, Boris Godunov, Wozzeck, The Queen of Spades. He completed his tenure with Argento’s Aspern Papers.
Plans include his return to ENO for Rigoletto, Tristan and Isolde in Miami and Otello in Seoul. On the concert platform he has worked in the US in Minnesota, Dallas, Houston, Utah; in Australia, in Melbourne and Perth, in France with the Orchèstre Philharmonique in Paris and Toulon. Elsewhere in Europe he has been at the Prague Spring Festival, Finnish Radio, Danish Radio Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, Bayerische Rundfunk, Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon and Porto National Orchestra. Recently he conducted the New Year performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in the Vienna Konzertsaal. In June 2013 he conducted the WNO Orchestra for the Cardiff Singer of the World competition. Future plans include his debut with the Bamburg Symphony Orchestra and a return to Prague.
