Elizabeth Atherton studied at Trinity College, Cambridge and RSAMD and has won numerous prestigious awards, including the Maggie Teyte Prize. She began her career with Welsh National Opera, singing roles including Mozart’s Countess, Donna Elvira and Pamina, and has since become a regular performer at Opera North, where roles include Fiordiligi Cosi fan tutte, Governess Turn of the Screw, Micaela Carmen, Donna Elvira and Helena Midsummer Night’s Dream. Other opera includes Minerva Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria, Micaela and Thibault Don Carlos (WNO); Helena (English Touring Opera); Micaela (Royal Albert Hall and The O2); Merab Saul, title role Savitri and Kathleen Riders to the Sea (Buxton Festival); Pamina (Grange Park); and she created the lead role in the world premiere of Birtwistle’s The Corridor to considerable critical acclaim (Aldeburgh, Bregenz and Holland Festivals). Elizabeth performs regularly in concert with all the major orchestras under such conductors as Pierre Boulez, Andrew Davis, Thierry Fischer, Richard Hickox, Charles Mackerras and Antonio Pappano and records frequently for the BBC. Future engagements include concerts with BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Ulster Orchestra and Royal Northern Sinfonia and the lead role in a new Birtwistle opera for the Aldeburgh Festival/ROH.
