Iowa native, Erik Nielsen studied conducting at the Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia, and oboe and harp at The Juilliard School. He joined Frankfurt Opera in 2002, and was Kapellmeister from 2008 until 2012. Repertoire in Frankfurt included Le nozze di Figaro; Die Entführung aus dem Serail; La clemenza di Tito; Così fan tutte; Tosca; Lohengrin; Lucia di Lammermoor; La bohème; Simplicius Simpliccissimus and the German premiere of Reimann’s Medea. Operatic engagements include The Magic Flute (English National Opera; the Metropolitan Opera, New York; Rome Opera); Ariadne auf Naxos (Boston Lyric Opera); Simplicus Simpliccissimus, Gisela! and We Come to the River, Lohengrin (Semperoper Dresden); La traviata (Opera Hedeland Festival, Denmark; Deutsche Oper Berlin); Così fan tutte (Teatro Nacional de Sao Carlos, Lisbon); Lear (Malmö Opera); Otello, Giulio Cesare, Ariane et Barbe-Bleu (Frankfurt); Peter Grimes (Opernhaus Zürich); The Merchant of Venice (Bregenz Festival); La forza del destino (Luxembourg); Die tote Stadt (Bilbao). Concert engagements include performances with the Frankfurt and Stuttgart radio orchestras, Chicago Civic Orchestra, Kölner Kammerorchester, Orquestra Sinfonica Portuguesa, Lisbon, Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Philharmonie Südwestfalen, Ensemble Modern, Junge Deustche Philharmonie, Royal Northern Sinfonia and performances of Mozart’s Requiem with the orchestra of Rome Opera.
