In praise of humanity
Leonore is utterly devoted to her husband Florestan. When he is unjustly arrested and detained as a political prisoner she sets out to rescue him. Posing as a man called Fidelio she works at the prison overseen by the abominable Don Pizarro. Time however is running out for Florestan - Pizarro decides to kill his most prized prisoner before the prison is inspected. Leonore’s belief in the power of love must carry her through to save her husband before it is too late.
Beethoven’s only opera is a rousing, triumphant affirmation of his belief that the most important human qualities - love, courage and kindness - can exist in even the most inhuman of conditions. Fidelio is an extraordinary musical achievement consisting of both tender intimate scenes and epic, highly charged choruses. Giuseppe Frigeni’s powerful production of Fidelio promises to offer great performances of this great opera.
