Arwel Morgan’s career has taken him from Monteverdi to Birtwhistle and from the baritone role of Sharpless in Madame Butterfly to the bass role of Osmin in Seraglio.

A native of Ystalyfera in the Swansea Valley, Arwel graduated in chemistry from Imperial College London. After winning the bass competition in the National eisteddfod in Wrexham in 1976, Arwel was invited to join Welsh National Opera.

He then took up a principal contract at English National Opera, where for more than ten years he undertook a wide variety of mostly bass-baritone repertoire including the title roles of Figaro, Falstaff and Don Pasquale.

Other roles include. Snug in Midsummer Nights Dream for both Rome Opera and the Aix-en-Provence Festival, Don Bartolo in Nozze di Figaro for Opera Zuid in Maastricht, Don Bartolo in Barber of Seville for the Spier Festival in South Africa, Fabrizio in the Thieving Magpie for Opera North and Zaccaria in a concert performance of Nabucco for the National Eisteddfod of Wales.
