Born in Reus in 1951, Lluís Pasqual founded the Teatre Lliure in Barcelona in 1976. He has worked as director of European theatre companies including the Centro Dramático Nacional in Madrid, Théâtre National de l'Odeon-Théâtre de l'Europe in Paris, the theatre section of the Venice Biennale, co-director of Teatre Lliure and Teatro Arriaga of Bilbao.
He has received many prestigious awards including The Generalitat de Catalunya Prize, The National Theatre Prize by the Spanish Ministry of Culture, Comunidad de Prize, Knight of the Arts, Officer of the Arts & Knight of the Legion of Honour by decree of the French Republic.
Lluís Pasqual has directed opera productions of works by Verdi, Puccini, Mozart, Rossini, Britten, Berio and Dallapiccola since the 1980s at houses including La Scala Milan, Opéra de Paris, Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, Teatro Real Madrid. He has directed at major festivals including the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Salzburg Festival and Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Italy.
