A heart-breaking tragedy
Katya is trapped. Suffocated by a loveless marriage. Bullied by a monstrous motherin- law. Locked in a stultifying village. She yearns to break free. When she falls in love with another man, Katya begins to feel the walls of her life close in upon her.
Soon she will find that there is no escape from her tortured existence. Janáček is a master of tragic opera. He uses every beautiful note to ensure that we care about Katya’s plight. Those who love the classic, tragic Italian operas should experience this heartfelt opera. Katie Mitchell’s celebrated 1950s set production is an intense experience bringing to life the opera’s claustrophobic atmosphere.
Amanda Roocroft who has a reputation as one of the finest singers of Janáček sings Katya. Lothar Koenigs has become known as an expert interpreter of the composer and conducts his first Janáček opera for the company.
