WNO MAX - The Most Beautiful Man from the Sea
Sponsored by Associated British Ports
Supported by The Foyle Foundation
In August 2005 WNO collaborated with Wales Millennium Centre (WMC) to stage a fantastic singing project which involved up to 500 people from local choirs and individuals, together with members of WNO Chorus and the full WNO orchestra. The music was specially commissioned for this event. It was based on a short story by author Gabriel Garcia Marquez and the performances in Wales Millennium Centre marked the first time local singers and WNO sang together on the main stage of WMC.
It is a magical story of renewal and redemption telling of a charismatic stranger who arrives in a rundown seaside community which long ago gave up dreaming of a brighter future. But is the stranger a gift from the sea or just an unwelcome visitor?
Richard Chew and Orlando Gough's multi-stylistic score - everything from tango and jazz to whistling winds - explodes the boundaries of traditional choral singing, whilst Gwyneth Lewis' poetic libretto captures wonderfully the shifting atmosphere of an intriguing seashore encounter.
