WNO MAX - WNO Youth Opera

Welsh National Youth Opera

Made up of enthusiastic, talented young singers and instrumentalists aged between 16 and 25 years old, the group meets regularly in Cardiff under the musical direction of Tim Rhys-Evans. They work with experienced theatre professionals - directors, vocal coaches and musicians - to improve performance skills as well as collaborating with composers and writers in creation of totally new pieces.

Each year WNYO mounts a full-scale production - opera, musical theatre, devised pieces - in the Weston Studio of Wales Millennium Centre.
We are currently recruiting for WNYO's 2008 company who will perform a new opera, The Calling of Maisy Day.  Written by award-winning composer, Brian Irvine, with a libretto by John Binias, the piece is a chilling exploration of life in a 21st century call centre.and will be performed by 50 singers and a lively ten-piece band.  Commissioning inspiring new pieces whose content is relevant and interesting to young performers is central to WNYO's ethos.

WNYO was praised in Opera Magazine's review of its Candide "A perfect performances?  As near as damn it, and no allowances need to be made for the young cast. Quite simply, they delivered. Thank you, WNYO: this for me was one of the musical highlights of last year"

Download an application form at the bottom of this page or contact Paula Scott
paula.scott@wno.org.uk / 029 2063 5116 for an informal chat. Singers are recruited by audition for each project. Instrumentalists are generally recruited via workshops.

Former members of WNYO have gone on to great things.  David Thaxton and Cohen (stage name Jon Robyns) have performed in the West End in Les Miserables and Avenue Q respectively.  Elizabeth Donovan completed three years as a WNO Associate Artist.  Stephanie Corley has recently sung the role of Musetta in Scottish Opera's La boheme, Katherine Bond appeared last summer in Garsington Opera's The Philosopher's Stone (Mozart) and Natalya Romaniw will represent Wales at BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2009.
