Tenor
Andrew Tortise was a choral scholar at Wells Cathedral before graduating from Trinity College, Cambridge in 2002. Whilst at Cambridge he was active as both tenor soloist and piano accompanist. Andrew currently studies with Ashley Stafford.
Recent and forthcoming opera engagements include Novice Billy Budd for Netherlands Opera; Ferrando Così fan tutte for Glyndebourne on Tour and David Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg for Welsh National Opera.
Future concert engagements include debuts with English Concert and Harry Bicket and with Concert Spirituel and Hervé Niquet singing Handel; a tour of Spain of Messiah with the Academy of Ancient Music and recitals at the Aldeburgh Festival with Malcolm Martineau and in Bruges with Richard Egarr.
Andrew made his opera debut in Paris at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysée as Apollo Semele in 2004 and has since sung Marzio Mitridate at the Salzburg Festival; Ferrando Così fan tutte and roles in Poppea for Opéra National de Lyon and Eurimaco Il Ritorno d’Ulisse for WNO with conductors including Rinaldo Alessandrini, William Christie and Marc Minkowski. Recent opera appearances have included the lead tenor role in Mernier Frühlings Erwachen at La Monnaie; Lucano Poppea conducted by Emmanuelle Haïm; the tenor arias in Bach St Matthew Passion in a new staged version by Katie Mitchell for Glyndebourne Festival Opera; Le Chevalier de Danois in Lully Armide at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysée directed by Robert Carsen and conducted by William Christie; Jenik Makropulos Case for Netherlands Opera and Robert in Richard Jones’ production of David Sawyer’s new opera Skin Deep for Opera North and the Bregenz Festival.
On the concert platform he has sung Haydn The Seasons for Huddersfield Choral Society with Martyn Brabbins; Mozart Requiem for the Philharmonia Orchestra; Berlioz L’Enfance du Christ for ECO; Messiah for NSO in Washington; Mozart Requiem with Sir Colin Davis; Squeak Billy Budd with Daniel Harding for LSO; Evangelist and arias Bach St John Passion; Britten Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings with the Academy of Ancient Music; Evangelist St Matthew Passion in Lisbon and arias St Matthew Passion with the Residentie Orchestra. He has appeared on tours with Sir John Eliot Gardiner singing Purcell and Monteverdi; Marc Minkowski singing Damon Acis and Galatea; Richard Egarr and the Orchestra of the Age of the Enlightenment with Messiah and William Christie as a member of Le Jardin des Voix. He has also appeared with the Combattimento Consort Amsterdam singing Bach Magnificat and Christmas Oratorio and has sung Ahasuerus Esther; Telemann Brockes Passion and Bach St John Passion with Netherlands Bach Society.
Recordings include Le Jardin des Voix on Virgin Classics, Rossini Petite Messe Solennelle on Hyperion and Buxtehude Membra Jesu Nostri for Netherlands Bach Society on Channel Classics, which was Gramophone magazine Editor’s Choice and awarded the Diapason d’Or.
