Today marks the 57th anniversary of the barcode.
Inventors Norman Woodland and Bernard Silver were granted patent on this day 57 years ago, and supermarkets haven't been the same since.
This season the barcode makes an appearance in Richard Jones' Wozzeck. His highly charged industrial vision of the opera is set in a baked bean canning factory. The barcode makes a chilling appearance between each scene.

WNO's barcode can be spotted on leaflets, posters, adverts, cinema screens and even baked bean tins across the UK as WNO embark on their autumn tour and when scanned the barcode actually reads wno.org.uk/wozzeck.
