Our Vienna Vice Season opens in Cardiff

19 May 2017

This weekend is the opening of our Summer Season Vienna Vice: a season showcasing the Viennese talent for being very naughty and extremely charming at the same time. Alongside a sumptuous new production of  Der Rosenkavalier, WNO is bringing back the perennially popular Die Fledermaus.

On Saturday 20 May the Season opens with Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus which is centred around a magnificent masquerade ball and features some of the most irresistible melodies ever written for stage. This production features a WNO favourite Mary Elizabeth Williams in the leading role of Rosalinde.

Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier will offer comedy and poignant drama in equal measure. This sumptuous opera has a bittersweet narrative that focuses on the emotions of its characters, focusing on the passing of time. This is a new production bringing to stage beautiful music and strong emotions as Rebecca Evans debuts in the iconic role of the Marschallin.

Both Viennese productions are at Wales Millennium Centre until 24 June before we will head to Birmingham.

During our Summer Season, Birmingham Hippodrome receives Die Fledermaus (28 June) and Der Rosenkavalier (1 July), and will also witness one of opera’s greatest love stories – Madam Butterfly. After a successful Spring tour around the UK, Madam Butterfly will captivate audiences in here between 27 -30 June. So, join us for this tragic tale of a young geisha named Cio-Cio San and her naval officer Pinkerton.

We hope you will join us for this season full of lavish costumes, mistaken identities and a tragic love story.
