Tomáš Hanus

21 April 2017

Tomáš Hanus became Music Director of Welsh National Opera in August 2016, having previously conducted the WNO Orchestra in July 2015 in St. David’s Cathedral as part of the Fishguard International Music Festival.

Born in Brno in the Czech Republic, he is now recognised as one of their most exciting and important conductors.

Cardiff audiences were introduced to Tomáš in October 2016 when his conducting of the WNO Orchestra, Chorus and Community Chorus in Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony received a five-star review in The Guardian, describing it as a “...fiery and fabulous tribute to Mahler”.  This was followed by a second appearance in the International Concert Series in March 2017 where he again impressed audiences and critics alike.

He will make his operatic debut with WNO conducting Der Rosenkavalier and Die Fledermaus in June 2017 followed by Khovanshchina and From the House of the Dead in the Autumn Season. He will also return for other concerts and special opera projects throughout the year.
