WNO Orchestra on the road

13 June 2017

Did you know that WNO has an extensive concert programme, running alongside our opera performances? Our hugely talented Orchestra travel the length and breadth of the country, often accompanied by guest conductors and soloists, bringing a varied programme of music to different regions.

So far in 2017 we’ve played at St David’s Hall and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff and Aberystwyth Arts Centre, with future performances coming up at Pontio in Bangor, Llangollen International Eisteddfod, Fishguard Festival and we’re looking forward to making our first visit to The Great Hall, at Swansea University Bay Campus in November.

From our New Year Viennese celebrations to our appearances at the International Concert Series (ICS), we play music from a wide range of composers covering the worlds of opera and classical. We are also committed to introducing young people to what we do, with our hugely successful Family Concerts which launched at St David’s Hall in 2016 and which we’re planning to bring to other cities in the future. We also have a forthcoming screening of The Wizard of Oz film accompanied by our Orchestra playing the live score (also at St David’s Hall) which will appeal to all generations.

We are privileged to be joined by some wonderful conductors and soloists for these concerts. Our very own Music Director, Tomáš Hanus, is already creating a buzz with his ICS appearances; James Southall is proving a huge hit at the Family Concerts; and Leader of the Orchestra, David Adams, frequently takes charge of concerts giving audiences his unique insight into the pieces of music they are hearing. The forthcoming Summer Classics at Pontio will see soprano Rebecca Evans and tenor Paul Charles Clarke take a break from their appearances in our Summer operas to perform a programme of well-known and much-loved pieces of music. Sir Bryn Terfel joins the Orchestra for a concert performance of Tosca at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod in July and Irish mezzo-soprano Tara Erraught will appear with Tomáš for his next St David’s Hall concert in November.

Keep checking the What’s On section of our website for details of forthcoming concerts and come and see our fantastic Orchestra somewhere near you.
