Welsh National Opera has revived the Patrice Caurier/Moshe Leiser production of Carmen. It’s a dark staging in every sense: brown costumes, brown lighting and mottled brown backcloths with a streak of blood red that grows in symbolic empathy with the protagonist’s fatalistic sense of her destiny. This sombre approach, admirably revived by Caroline Chaney, is underlined by Frederic Chaslin’s meticulous conducting and Patricia Bardon’s magnificently sung but broodingly introspective portrayal of the title role as a hard-bitten cynic who is far more sardonic than seductive towards her lovers.
