How can I find out which operas have Audio Description?
The best way to find out which operas carry Audio Description is to consult the Operas page of our website. Audio Described performances can also be found when searching What’s On.
How much does the Audio Description headset cost?
There is no charge for using the headset. It is obtained from theatre staff prior to the performance and returned at the end. Please note that some theatres require a returnable deposit.
When using the headset, how will I be able to follow the story if the opera is not sung in English?
When the opera is not performed in English, some narrative assistance is also given. This enables the listener to fully understand the purpose of each scene, and its place within the story or plot.
How is Audio Description for opera different to other Audio Described performances I’ve attended?
As well as creating vivid spoken images of the production and story, due regard and attention is paid to the colour and phrasing of the orchestral score. As a result, the description is structured around and within the musical framework of the piece.
Will the Audio Describer talk across the singers?
The description is delivered in the natural breaks and pauses between singing.
Will I have time to familiarise myself with the story or Audio Description headset before the performance?
Fifteen minutes prior to the performance, an introduction to the sets, characters and costumes is given through the headset. This allows the listener to hear detailed background information about the production itself whilst taking the time to familiarise themselves with the controls on the headset.
