'...like so much else in this production, totally gripping and convincing' THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
'Salome begins not as a decadent vamp but as an ignorant girl asking, "why does my mother's husband look at me like that?" In the course of the opera she discovers knowledge, beauty, love, fear, the pleasure in fear, powerlessness and the sensation of exerting great power - all facets of sexuality' André Engel, Director
A powerful combination of faith, violence, sex and sensuality, featuring the UK debut of Erika Sunnegardh in the title role. The cast of outstanding soloists assembled for these performances also includes Peter Hoare, Sally Burgess, Matthew Best, Anna Burford and Alasdair Elliott.
Salome - King Herod's step-daughter - performs the infamous dance of the seven veils to try to arouse him. He promises anything she wants in return - and she demands the head of John the Baptist who had previously refused a kiss from her. When his severed head is presented, Salome can finally achieve her wish - even though she pays the ultimate price.
