Mahler's Fifth Symphony is a great epic journey, from the dark tragedy of its opening through to the celebratory light-filled closing movement. All human emotion is here - struggle, stillness and exhiliration. At its centre is a tender love letter to his wife, the Adagietto, one of Mahler's best-loved creations, featured in the film, Death in Venice. As a curtain-raiser comes Pulenc's Gloria - joyful, brimming over with youthful vitality and infectious melody.
