Production blog
Yesterday afternoon was the funeral of Linda Dobell, the choreographer for the original Richard Jones production of Wozzeck 5 years ago. Several of the cast and members of the company including our assistant conductor, Anthony Negus went to London to pay their respects. As a result, it was a quiet day at work with an enjoyable dance rehearsal for Scene 9 in the morning led by Harry Fehr (Assistant Director) with a small selection of the cast.
In the afternoon I worked with Lothar, the Marie (Viola Chodowicz) and the language coach Jacqueline. We work on Marie’s solo scenes in some detail, discussing the finer points of Sprechgesang and ‘finding each other’…Viola is a warm-hearted young woman, always bubbling in rehearsals. Her voice is a truly wonderful instrument, searingly powerful and movingly expressive, especially at the top of its register. The lullaby in Scene 3 is a special moment and produces some of the most ravishingly tender singing I have heard for a while.
