Synopsis

Plot Summary
Wozzeck earns extra money from the Captain and the Doctor, to support Marie and their child. Marie is unfaithful to Wozzeck with the Drum Major. Wozzeck has been having visions. When he learns about Marie and the Drum Major he decides to kill her. He cuts her throat and drowns himself. Children tells Wozzeck and Marie's son that his mother is dead.

Act 1
Scene 1: Wozzeck earns extra cash by shaving the Captain.
Scene 2: Wozzeck is tormented by visions.
Scene 3: Marie is attracted by the Drum Major. Wozzeck’s condition frightens her.
Scene 4: The Doctor pays Wozzeck to stick to his diet of beans.
Scene 5: Marie has sex with the Drum Major.

Act 2
Scene 1: Marie looks at the jewels, a gift from the Drum Major. Wozzeck surprises Marie and is anxious for their son. He hands her his pay and the additional earnings.
Scene 2: The Captain and the Doctor inform Wozzeck of Marie’s unfaithfulness.
Scene 3: Wozzeck confronts Marie.
Scene 4: Wozzeck sees Marie and the Drum Major dancing.
Scene 5: Wozzeck is brutalised by the Drum Major.

Act 3
Scene 1: Marie and the Drum Major are penitent.
Scene 2: Wozzeck kills Marie.
Scene 3: The blood on Wozzeck’s hands arouses suspicion.
Scene 4: Wozzeck is drowned.
Scene 5: The children inform Wozzeck and Marie’s son of his mother’s death.
