Gesler: William Tell

Born in Manchester, Clive Bayley’s repertoire spans Monteverdi, Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Berg, Britten, Birtwistle, Wagner and Ligeti. Recent roles include Claggart Billy Budd (Gothenburg Opera); Daland Der fliegende Holländer (Royal Danish Theatre). 2014 opened with his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he sang Doctor Wozzeck and in Europe included title role Don Quichotte (Grange Park Opera). Other engagements included Dosifei Khovanshchina, the General The Gambler (Frankfurt Opera); Sir Walter Raleigh Gloriana (Hamburg Opera; Royal Opera House); Prince Gremin Eugene Onegin (Grange Park Opera). Previous roles include Arkel Pelléas et Mélisande, Tempo / Antinoo / Nettuno Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, Titurel Parsifal, Sylvano La Calisto, Geronte Manon Lescaut and Achilla Giulio Cesare (Bayerische Staatsoper); Fasolt in David McVicar’s new production of Das Rheingold (Opera National du Rhin, Strasbourg); Claggart in Richard Jones’s production of Billy Budd (Frankfurt Opera). He made his debut with the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, as Second Prisoner Fidelio, since appearing in the world premiere of Harrison Birtwistle's Gawain, Biterolf Tannhäuser, Colline La bohème, Hans Foltz Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Carbon Cyrano de Bergerac, Thoas Iphigénie en Tauride, Sylvano, Hunding Die Walküre. He also works regularly with Glyndebourne, Grange Park Opera, Opera North and WNO.
