Donald Maxwell was born in Perth and studied geography at Edinburgh University and singing with Joseph Hislop. He taught geography for five years then started his opera career with Scottish Opera. Maxwell has performed leading roles with WNO and in all the major British and international opera houses. He was Director of the National Opera Studio from 2001 to 2008 and Head of Opera Studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama from 2004 to 2009.
