John Caird

John Caird is a freelance writer and director of plays, musicals and operas. He is an Honorary Associate Director of the RSC where he directed over 20 productions of Shakespeare as well as classic and new plays, including Nicholas Nickleby and Les Misérables. His numerous National Theatre productions included Hamlet, Humbleboy, Peter Pan and his own new version of Bernstein’s Candide. He also directed and wrote the libretti for André Previn’s opera Brief Encounter, and for Tarik O’Regan’s opera The Phoenix, both premiering at Houston Grand Opera. Theatre Craft, his book about directing plays and musicals, is published by Faber and Faber.
