Meet WNO

Meriel Andrew

Soprano

Meriel sang at school and in Eisteddfodau from the age of four and had piano lessons and singing lessons as a child. She later studied at the Royal Northern College of Music & Drama for two years on the postgraduate professional performance course.

Prior to joining WNO, Meriel taught English at Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni for six years before retraining in Manchester.

Meriel’s personal highlights at WNO so far include performing the role of Chief Hen in The Cunning Little Vixen: 'The next day my four year old daughter turned to me and said, Mummy, when I grow up, I want to be a chicken like you!'

Meriel has always enjoyed singing to small groups and taking music to people who can't come to the opera for different reasons; she finds singing and interacting with an audience on a personal level extremely moving.

Away from WNO, Meriel helps her husband on their allotments and tries to find interesting ways of preparing the produce they grow (50 things to do with Butternut Squash!). She also enjoys spending time with her family and caravan holidays with friends.
