Dvořák Othello Concert Overture, Op 93

Berlioz Les nuits d’été, Op 7

Strauss Suite fromDer Rosenkavalier, Op 59

Janáček Closing Scene fromThe Makropulos Case

WNO Music Director Tomáš Hanus and WNO Orchestra are joined by the distinguished German soprano Angela Denoke for an enthralling evening of orchestral, vocal and operatic highlights.

The programme opens with Dvořák’s Othello overture, a piece that explores Shakespeare’s notion of foreignness. This is followed by Berlioz’s ‘Summer Nights’ – one of the most magical of all song-cycles.

The second half opens with the virtuosic orchestra suite from Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier (conducted by Tomáš Hanus to considerable acclaim here last summer). The concert ends with the closing scene from Janáček’s The Makropulos Case - the story of a world-famous singer who achieves immortality but discovers that you should be careful what you wish for.

Angela Denoke performed the lead role in The Makropulos Case at the 2011 Salzburg Festival with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under Esa-Pekka Salonen.

'The score presents a huge challenge that WNO’s new Music Director Tomáš Hanus meets with remarkable flair and confidence. He and his terrific orchestra don’t miss a trick in a reading that is sumptuous and expansive as well as vivacious and witty.' The Telegraph review of Der Rosenkavalier, 5 June 2017
