Christmas gift ideas

4 December 2017

The festive season is upon us and there are only a few weekends before the big day for you to get the perfect gifts for your loved ones. Don’t worry about going out and hitting the shops because WNO have the perfect list for those of the musical persuasion.

For the opera fans why not treat them to one of our operas in our Spring Season. We have three enchanting operas to choose from Tosca, Don Giovanni and La forza del destino all guaranteed to rouse emotions.

The undeniably brilliant story of Floria Tosca against the turbulent backdrop of Rome during the Napoleon invasion is an apt setting for this thrilling story of love, lust, loyalty and corruption. Puccini characterises the drama through his exquisite melodies and orchestration, and fabulous arias that have made Tosca one of the best-loved operas in the world, making it the perfect gift for any frequent opera goer and new comers alike.

Don Giovanni

The arrogant and charismatic Don Giovanni seduces his way around Europe, taking what he wants and living for lust, without conscience. When one of his conquests ends in murder, it looks like his luck is about to turn. He finds himself on the run, pursued by disgruntled ex-lovers, fiancées and a force from beyond the grave. Tickets to this thrilling opera will be the perfect stocking fillers.

La forza del destino

An opera following an inescapable chain of events creates a reminder that the force of destiny really is unstoppable. This epic opera by Verdi is the perfect gift this Christmas, with a story told through a rousing score that includes the instantly-familiar Overture popularised through its use in classic film scores and advertisements.

WNO Orchestra in concert

For the classical music enthusiasts a ticket to our next ICS concert at St Davids Hall would be your best bet to put a smile on their face this Christmas. Conducted by WNO Music Director Tomáš Hanus with special violin solo by Henning Kraggerud it will be a night not to be missed on 14 January.

Or, how about a trip to Vienna? Our WNO Orchestra will transport you away from the cold January weather and into a world of musical magic in our A Night in Vienna concerts. Following the success of these concerts last year we thought we’d continue the annual new years concerts. We’ll be taking them across Wales in the first few weeks of January with the first concert on 4 January in Swansea.

WNO Friends membership

For the WNO fans why not give them the gift of friendship? At WNO we love to make friends and welcome everyone to be a part of the WNO family. As a WNO Friend you will be among the first to know what we are doing and whereand will receive the Friends magazine three times a year, taking you straight to the heart of the company and you will also be helping us to continue to provide spectacular opera. You’ll even get to book our 18/19 Season ahead of the general public when it goes on sale next Spring.

Rhondda Rips It Up!

And last but not least, something a little different from WNO, our summer production of Rhondda Rips It Up! This exciting production will tell the story of an inspirational, but possibly unsung Welsh heroine, Margaret Haig Thomas (Lady Rhondda), and marks the centenary of the women’s partial Suffrage Bill, which enabled all men and some women over the age of 30 to vote for the first time.

So there’s our WNO wishlist for Christmas. In the meantime why not head over to our Instagram page and open the doors to our advent calendar. A daily festive treat from WNO everyday leading up to Christmas day.

We hope you have a wonderful time this festive season and we’ll see you in the New Year for another sensational year.
