12 September 2017
This Sunday (17 September 2017 11am), WNO Artistic Director David Pountney and Music Director Tomáš Hanus will present an insight into two of our Autumn Season productions: Musorgsky's Khovanshchina and Janáček's From the House of the Dead. These operas will be their first artistic collaborations together for WNO.
For one hour and 15 minutes David and Tomáš who will be joined by artists and members of the creative teams from both productions, talk through the creative process of putting an opera together. The morning will also include live musical performances from both productions.
The event will begin with a talk on Khovanshchina where David and Tomáš will be joined by bass-baritone Robert Hayward. He will perform extracts from the role of Prince Ivan Khovansky, leader of the unruly Streltsy soldiers and instigator of what Peter the Great was to dub ‘Khovanshchina’ – the ‘Khovansky business’.
This will be followed by a talk on From the House of the Dead, where we welcome special guest John Tyrrell, the distinguished Janáček scholar. John has revisited the composer’s manuscript and sketches to create the most authoritative edition to date of this 20th-century masterpiece, which will be performed in our version of the production.
They will be joined by bass-baritone Simon Bailey for a presentation of Šiškov’s great Act Three monologue, one of the opera’s most emotionally and dramatically powerful scenes. The pianist for this event is Sergey Rybin.
This event is the perfect introduction to these musical masterpieces ahead of our opening performances at Wales Millennium Centre on Saturday 23 September. It will take place in the Awen Bar, Wales Millennium Centre at 11am. This event is a free event and there is no need to pre-book.
