You may have heard us talking about our Magic Butterfly VR experience. Magic Butterfly is an immersive virtual reality (VR) experience created by REWIND and WNO and has been based at Wales Millennium Centre, with a short stint at the Llawn Festival in Llandudno during the summer.
The good news is that we are now taking our shipping container out on tour. We will be visiting Birmingham, Liverpool and finally The V&A, London in January.
What is Magic Butterfly?
Our VR experience is a free experience that will reimagine scenes from Madam Butterfly and The Magic Flute, enchanting you in through a unique form of storytelling using classical music, art and technology. Featuring an original WNO recording, this presentation will be your perfect companion if you are new to, or unfamiliar with, the world of opera.
Be among the first to participate in this pioneering event. Enter our specially designed shipping container and don a VR headset, to be taken right inside two of our classic productions as you conjure up some animals as Tamino from The Magic Flute and enjoy an exclusive performance of Madam Butterfly’s 'One Fine Day' aria.
Magic Butterfly lasts for approximately 8 minutes for the two VR experiences. The ‘One Fine Day’ experience from Madam Butterfly lasts 4min 21secs and ‘How Soft, How Strong Your Magic Sound’ from The Magic Flute lasts 3min 2secs. The experience is free and no advanced booking is required.
There is an age restriction of 13 years + to take part and anyone between the ages of 13-15 must be accompanied by an adult. The experience is accessible for wheelchair users.
Where and When will we be visiting?
Magic Butterfly will be beginning its tour in Birmingham on Tuesday 31 October and will run until Saturday 4 November. It will be based in Birmingham Hippodrome Square just outside of Birmingham Hippodrome itself. We will then be hitting the road and travelling up to Albert Dock in Liverpool which will become our base between 8-12 November and coincides with our Autumn Opera Season at Liverpool Empire. We recommend popping along and visiting us on your way to the theatre to enjoy WNO in a totally new way.
Finally we will be heading to The V&A, London between 19-21 January where we will be exhibiting Magic Butterfly as part of their event ‘Opera: Passion, Power and Politics’. The exhibition explores the vivid story of opera from its origins in late-Renaissance Italy to the present day.
For opening and closing times of Magic Butterfly, please visit our website or give us a call on 029 2063 5030. The line is staffed Monday – Friday 9.30am – 5.30pm.
We hope you can pop along and take full advantage of our free VR experience whether you are visiting us this autumn season or not and as ever we would love to hear your feedback on our social pages @WNOTweet.
