You're never too old or young to be a WNO Friend

4 January 2018

In January 2018 WNO Friends welcomed their youngest and oldest ever new members.

A 94 year old lady who has been attending and enjoying Bristol Friends events for two years joined up and only wishes she had done so years ago. This goes to prove that you’re never too old to love opera.

We were also thrilled to welcome our youngest ever Friend, Owen Swanborough, to our wonderful group of supporters. Owen is new to opera, but discovered a love for music when he began voice lessons at the tender age of six. His first operatic experience was seeing his singing teacher, Abigail Kelly, perform in The Thieving Magpie. This inspired him to listen to more opera, his favourite being a recording of La bohème with Mirella Freni and Pavarotti.

Owen’s first WNO production was Die Fledermaus in Birmingham in 2017 and he was awed by the opera, from the wonderful singing and acting to the fabulous costumes. Following this production, his family thought that Friends membership would be a great gift for his up-coming 11th birthday. Owen was delighted with his gift, and looked forward to seeing our production of Don Giovanni in  spring 2018. He and his mum are a attended the dress rehearsal in February 2018 – just one of the benefits you get as a WNO Friend; when you buy a ticket for one of our operas, you will get a chance to see it at the dress rehearsal in Cardiff.

We hope that you will be inspired by these members and buy the gift of music for the opera-lover in your life – or even for yourself. By becoming a Friend, you will be helping WNO to provide spectacular operas, orchestral concerts and work with schools and young people.
