David Pountney receives one of Poland's highest honours

David Pountney has been awarded one of Poland’s highest honours at a ceremony in Vienna.  He was presented with the Cavalier’s Cross of the Order of Merit for his contribution to the promotion of Polish culture.  David is Intendant of the Bregenz Festival, which is a performing arts festival held annually every summer in Bregenz, Austria. A number of works by Polish artists have been presented at the Bregenz Festival in recent years including Karol Szymanowski’s King Roger,  Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s The Passenger and the forthcoming premiere of André Tchaikowsky’s The Merchant of Venice.

The Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland is bestowed on foreigners and Polish citizens permanently living abroad, who have made outstanding contributions to international cooperation between the Republic of Poland and other nations. The President of the Republic of Poland, Mr Bronislaw Komorowski, presented the medal to David who said: “I feel a deep gratitude and honour to receive this award.  I am delighted that the Bregenz Festival could contribute to the dissemination of the culture of Poland”.
