28 December 2017
2018 is here and we have some spectacular performances and events to share with you in the New Year. Here are some notable dates for your diary...
On 4, 6, 7, 9, 21 January our WNO Orchestra will be heading out and sharing the joys of Vienna across Wales in a concert that will leave you all with a spring in your step as you waltz the night away with us. If you enjoyed our production of Die Fledermaus that toured in Summer and Autumn 2017 then you won’t want to miss this concert with music by Strauss II, the composer of that fun opera.
Join us on 14 January as our WNO Orchestra returns to St Davids Hall for our concert as a part of their International Concert Series. We will also be welcoming the return of our Music Director Tomáš Hanus to Cardiff as he takes the reins of the Orchestra, alongside the fantastic violin soloist Henning Kraggerud. Our virtual reality project Magic Butterfly toured around the country during Autumn 2017 featuring experiences around The Magic Flute and Madam Butterfly. But don’t worry if you missed out on seeing this unique way to see opera this year as you can see it again in 2018 when we’ll be taking it to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London on 19 and 20 January. Here’s a trailer of what to expect when you don a VR headset.
Intrigued by our Spring Season operas? Join our Artistic Director David Pountney and our Conductor Laureate Carlo Rizzi on 21 January as they discuss what to expect from our operas with a special focus on WNO’s new production of La forza del destino. As well as giving a creative look at what the production will look and feel like, they will provide an illustrated introduction to the co-production with Theater Bonn on the three new Verdi productions that we’ll present each Spring Season until 2020.
This will be a concert not to be missed as our WNO Orchestra joins forces with BBC National Orchestra of Wales for this epic musical evening. Conducted by our Music Director Tomáš Hanus and Thomas Søndergård, Principal Conductor BBC NOW in two acts of spectacular performances by both orchestras that will be recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3. This will be at BBC Hoddinott Hall, Wales Millennium Centre on 24 January. To purchase your tickets click here.

Followed by a revival of the spectacular opera Tosca and last but certainly not least will be the fantastic Don Giovanni hitting the stage from 22 February.
