WNO Opera Debut for Tomáš

31 May 2017

WNO Music Director Tomáš Hanus made his opera debut recently with a rousing performance of Die Fledermaus, which runs in Cardiff until 24 June before touring to Birmingham Hippodrome. Tomáš also takes up the baton for Der Rosenkavalier, and following yesterday’s dress rehearsal (30 May), the whole company is looking forward to presenting this piece to the audience for the first time on Sunday (4 June).

For many audience members, this Summer season is their first opportunity to see Tomáš in action and they have been overwhelmingly impressed with the passion he displays in the pit as well as his connection to the Orchestra and singers. Critics are also singing his praises; The Stage, in their 4-star review of Die Fledermaus, said ‘Tomas Hanus, making his WNO opera debut, ... conducts the superb WNO chorus and orchestra with belle epoque panache...’ This follows an earlier 5-star review in The Guardian for the Mahler concert which Tomáš conducted at St David’s Hall, Cardiff in October 2016.

Come and see the maestro for yourself – performance dates can be found here.

Tomáš returns to WNO in Autumn to conduct Khovanshchina and From The House of the Dead and to the concert stage at St David’s Hall for Shostakovich’s Leningrad symphony.
