Touch Tour and Audio Description | Welsh National Opera

Touch Tour and Audio Description

Opera is the ultimate art form combining music and drama to tell gripping stories on a huge scale. Welsh National Opera is committed to sharing the magic of opera with as many people as possible. As part of this commitment, the Company audio describes one opera per season. Audio description brings the full spectacle of opera alive to people suffering from sight loss, partially sighted people and blind people.

Before the performance, our audio describers will take ticket-holders on a Touch Tour, bringing them backstage to interact with the set with a chance to handle props and costumes. There, they also meet with the production’s Stage Manager who personally shows them around, sharing insight into the production and possibly giving away a backstage secret or two!

Our ticket-holders are then taken to their seats in time for the performance and are given audio headsets. Through the headsets provided, they will hear an introduction, setting the scene ready for the performance. The performance will start at 7.15pm and the audio commentary will then ensure they know what is happening on stage, and how the costumes and set they have already been close to, are being used.
